4 Lighting Ideas for the Most Inviting Home on the Block

A warm and inviting home is something most homeowners strive to create. From the overall look of the home, to the landscaping, we work hard to make sure the curb appeal is one that impresses not only ourselves, but the neighbors and guests as well. At night however, curb appeal can be lost due to the face all these amazing elements aren't able to be seen. Outdoor lighting is a simple and effective way to keep that warm and inviting feeling to your home even at night!

Here are 4 greats ways to create the most inviting home on the block through landscape lighting!

1. Walkways

The most common (and useful) places to incorporate landscape lighting for an inviting home is on the walkways leading to the entrances. Adding lights to the walkways allows both you and guests to easily led to and from the home. It also adds safety to the walks because it allows those on the walkway to see exactly where they are going, avoiding tripping and falling!

A few great ways to light the walkways is through path lights, core drilled lights, or downlighting! Path lights are fixtures designed to push light directly down onto the walk. They can be used on a variety of different paths and bring that much needed light to each one.

Core drilled lights are a great option for those looking to light a concrete walk. This lighting technique is one where the lighting fixture is installed directly into the walk itself. As you can see from the image to the right, a precise hole is drilled into the concrete for the fixture to sit, making it seamless with the concrete. The light illuminates the path without having a fixture above ground!

Downlighting is another way to add light to walkways. It is perfect for those with walks surrounded by large trees. A down light is mounted high up in the tree to cast light down onto the path, creating a moonlit feel to the walk!

2. Architecture

Adding lighting to the architecture of your home is another great way to give your home that inviting feel. To illuminate a home's architecture, wash lights can be installed at the base of the home to shine up onto the house. This lighting technique will add a soft glow over the home's exterior, highlight all the beauty of the stone, siding, brick, etc, of the architecture!

In addition to the warm and inviting feel that is added, architecture lighting can also add a huge level of safety to the home. A well-lit home feels welcoming and inviting to you and guests, however, it is a major deterrent to intruders. Lighting poses as a threat to those looking to trespass because it makes it difficult for them to go unnoticed. Unlike a motion detection light, a home lit at all times keeps an intruder from even trying to enter the property.

3. Landscaping

Lighting all the different aspects of a landscape is truly what brings an entire lighting project together cohesively. The goal is not to light every tree, bush, and plant in the landscape, but to intentionally light certain aspects to create that balanced dimension that is so beautiful.

All the lit elements come together to create that warmth you want from your home at night. Lighting the landscaping can make the front of your home and property feel extremely inviting for you and visitors. It makes first time guests feel comfortable and know exactly where they need to go because the home and its entrances are able to be seen from all the well-lit landscape elements!

4. Driveway

One final idea to create an inviting home is by lighting the driveway! Illuminating the driveway can help to eliminate all the uncertainty of where the drive ends and the yard begins. It removes the guessing game for you and your guests when arriving and departing from the home at night. In addition, it helps those coming to your home for the first time feel a sense of comfort that they know exactly where they need to go.

If your driveway has large trees next to it, we are able to mount down lights high up in the those trees to create a moonlight effect on to the drive. The light cuts through the branches and leaves to cast amazing shadows onto the driveway as well, adding such a depth of beauty to the home. Whether you are returning from work, coming back from an evening walk, or guests are coming over, a beautifully lit drive is the perfect way to boost curb appeal and make you and guests feel welcome and safe.
