4 Unexpected Areas to Add Landscape Lighting

There are so many areas landscape lighting can enhance and bring life to a property. The most common areas include places like walkways, stairs, entrances, driveways, and all the different types of landscaping around the property.

All of these lit elements come together to create a safe and beautiful home. There are many other elements that add both safety and beauty to a property that are often overlooked.

Here are 4 unexpected areas to add landscape lighting!

1. Arbors

Additions like arbors or gazebos in a landscape bring such an elegant feel to the property. They tend to draw the eye to the section of the yard where they are installed. This is important because they often are indicators of a path or walkway. When you incorporate lighting to these structures, it not only brings dimension and elegance into the evening hours,  it helps guide to and from the walk or path.

There are quite a few ways to bring light to a structure like and arbor or gazebo. The most common techniques for this type of lighting project are downlights and uplights. These techniques highlight the structure in a subtle and simple way while at the same time bringing that function to those arbors that are above paths and walks. Whether the light shines down from above or up from the base, it provides a beautiful flow over the structure.

A fun and unique way to bring light to an arbor would be to add star liters under the roof of the structure or on the side posts. Learn more about this fun lighting technique here!

2. Fountains

Adding lighting to these takes the tranquility to an entirely new level at night. The light flickers with the movement of the water similarly to the flickering flames in the wind of a campfire. In addition, illuminating a fountain allows you to showcase all the beauty of the fountain's architecture that is seen during the day but is lost after dark!

3. Potted Plants

One pretty unexpected or overlooked area (or object in this case) to light would be potted plants. Potted plants add height, depth, and beauty to any area they are in. The pots themselves are such a fantastic accent to a garden or outdoor living space. The plants inside the pot bring life and warmth to the spaces as well as creating that desired dimension in an outdoor space or garden.

Highlighting these gorgeous pots and plants is a simple way to bring that beauty with you into the evening hours. Downlighting is a great way to light the potted plants around a property.  When the light shines down from above, it creates this fantastic moonlit effect over the area below. This adds a soft, appealing glow over the potted plants.

4. Fire pits

An area that might be the most unexpected to light is a fire pit area. There is something special about the flames flickering in the wind so why add lighting? One word...safety! So often, fire pits are in dark areas of a property, posing as a threat to those walking around the fire pit. The fire itself does not put off enough light to guide those looking for a seat around the fire.

A great way to not disrupt the ambiance and feel of the bonfire is to use undercap lighting. This light is installed under the edges of a permanent sitting wall or the fire pit itself to shine light downward. It helps to illuminate the area around the fire pit to allow both you and guests to navigate around with ease. It helps eliminate tripping and falling near the fire and simply provides that needed illumination that the fire does not.
