Home Security: How Landscape Lighting Can Add a Layer of Defense

When landscape lighting is installed correctly, all the lit elements should come together as a whole to create a ring of security around your property. The lighting allows you to have more visual control over your property from inside the house. When it extends to the very back parts of your property, it eliminates those dark pockets where an intruder can hide or lurk. It also acts as a deterrent because lighting poses as a threat to an intruder.

This blog highlights the many ways landscape lighting can add an extra layer of security to your home at night.

The Difference: Lighting vs. No Lighting

As you can see from the before and after images above, lighting completely changes the look and feel of a home. The image with no lighting depicts an almost lifeless home. The darkness sends an inviting message to an intruder because the threat of being seen is lessened.

When the light is added, it creates a warm home, full of life to those passing. Like we said before, a home with outdoor lighting poses as a threat to an intruder; it's the "lights are on, someone must be home," mentality.

This ideology was proven during a 6-month study done in New York a few years back. Outdoor street lighting was added to housing developments with highly elevated levels of crime. The study found that the crime rate was lowered by 39% compared to the housing developments that did not receive the new street lighting ( Such drastic change was seen from simple street lighting to the neighborhoods. Imagine the change if outdoor lighting was added to each home on  the street!

What are some areas to add lighting to that will create that extra layer of security?

1. Entrances

Lighting the entrances of your home is very important because they are often the weak area of your home. Entrances are where the greatest number of incidents occur. Areas like the side or back doors are very appealing because they are usually less noticeable compared to those in the front.

Making sure all entrances are well-lit makes approaching or entry without being seen a challenge for those looking to trespass. This is make any intruder hesitant to even trying to approach your home, enhancing that first layer of defense.

2. Architecture

Many times when we think of adding security lights to our homes, our minds instantly go to a flood light. The most common form of this lighting technique is the one that casts a large, bright, spot light that is triggered by motion. This can be effective for fighting of an intruder, however, it can be extremely invasive and unpleasant to the neighbors and can be unnecessarily be set off by guests or animals.

A more effective and appreciated way is by subtly illuminating the architecture of the home. We place the fixtures low in the surrounding landscape, directing the light up onto the home. Doing so creates a wash of light that highlights the beautiful elements of your architecture while at the same time providing that desired security.

3. Landscape

Another main way to create that layer of security to your home through outdoor lighting is to illuminate the landscape. When we light the landscaping of a home, it eliminates pockets of dark space in the back edges or heavily landscaped areas of the property.

This limits the areas for trespassers to hid and to be unseen. Getting rid of the dark pockets creates a predicament for those trying to sneak up on your home. It pushes them to other home for an easier, less risky invasion.

4. Driveways and Walkways

A simple yet effective way to add that extra layer of defense is to light the drive and walks. Obviously our walkways and drives are designed to lead to the entrances of our homes. Providing lighting in these areas cuts down on the opportunity for someone to approach without being seen.

In addition, lighting in these areas allows for you to see motion outside your windows at night. It helps you easily see a person walking or lurking around the property because shadows and movement are much more noticeable. This in conjunction with all the other lit elements on the property creates the ultimate first layer of defense.
