Interview with Landscape Lighting Pro's Juan Lopez (Crew Foreman)

What is your favorite part about working for Landscape Lighting Pro of Utah?

I Like this job because it is not a regular job. I like that we are working somewhere different every day and that it is always something new. I also like working here because it requires a lot of thinking. Some might think that it's as simple as "yeah sure, just put some lights here and there". This is not how it is though. It can get really technical. Every day is a challenge, and every day I learn more. I'm always excited to do a good job. When I'm in charge of a big job, and it's like nothing we've ever done before, we have to figure out how to do it right.

How has Landscape Lighting Pro of Utah changed since you've been here?

Lots of things have changed since I started. When I first started there was only three of us on the install crew and we worked out of a trailer. Today there are nine of us working together and we have three installation vehicles. We have a bigger facility now too.

What is your favorite project you've worked on?

The Shane Co. Project, I was in charge of, is one of my favorite. It took a lot of engineering and thought to figure out how to make it come together. When I first started, I had to learn and pick up on things here and there. Now, years later, I know a lot and was able to figure out how to make it all work.

Business-commercial-store-front-outdoor-lighting-utah.jpgHow would describe what it is you do?

It's difficult to describe exactly. I am one of the senior guys so I help lead the crew and make certain decisions about how we install each system. When I talk to my family or close friends about what it is I do, I tell them that I like what I do because it's a good job.

What piece of advice would you give to a new employee?

That they need to learn to listen. When new guys start, they sometimes think they know more than they really do. For us to get along in the field, it's important that they take the time to learn, pay attention, ask questions and ask for help if they aren't sure what to do.

What is one accomplishment at work that you are the most proud of? Why?

We did some work out of state recently that I was really proud of. Used a mag drill on the descending stair case. Doing all the measuring and figuring out how to run my wires took a lot of time, but it looked good in the end. I was really proud of how it turned out and was glad I got to work on it.

What do you like to do on your days off?

I like to spend time with friends and family.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

I enjoy working on my cars and keeping them running well.

How long have you worked for Landscape Lighting Pro of Utah?

I have been here for nearly 10 years.

What is your personal philosophy?

That I need to always be trying to be better at whatever it is I do: to be a better man, to be a better husband, to be a better employee. Trying to better myself in all aspects of my life is very important to me.
